Ten Chords for a starting Guitar Player

It's a aggregate that just doesn't blend well, but it always happens.

Start with 1 part enthusiastic starting guitar player, 1 part beautiful new guitar, and 1 part confusing "Learn guitar" chord book. The ensue is rarely pretty -- it normally results in 1 confused and frustrated not-so-enthusiastic-anymore guitar player!

    Basic Chords On A Guitar

A "chord" is plainly a aggregate of notes played at the same time. You finger obvious positions, then strum the strings; what results is a chord.

Ten Chords for a starting Guitar Player

Most chord books are technically exact -- they do show you finger positions for loads and loads of chords. However, they're often functionally deficient -- they show you chords, but don't show you which ones are leading and why!

Rather than trying to learn hundreds of chords in order, it makes more sense to learn the most leading chords in the right combination.

I think that if you incorporate on learning just 10 chords -- in combinations of two or three at a time -- you'll jump-start your guitar-playing work and have fun from the very beginning.

Let's start and see how easy it is!

    The First Three

We'll still use your guitar chord book; you'll look up the chords we mention to learn how to finger them. We just won't learn the chords in the order presented in your book.

The first three chords you want to learn are: G, C, and D. These may be called G Major, C Major, and D Major in your chord book. These chords are leading for some reasons.

First, they form the supreme "I-Iv-V" Chord sequence, sometimes called a "3 Chord Progression". Once you learn to listen, you'll perceive that probably 90% of all music uses this progression (rock, country, blues, soul, even classical!).

Next, this particular "key" (key of G) is used in a lot of popular music, especially country. This means you can "play along" with songs and you'll be in the same key, or pitch.

These three chords happen to use a lot of "open" strings -- strings on which you do Not place your fingers. Open string chords "ring" in a most pleasing manner and generally sound richer than non-open string chords.

This key fits well with instruments such as violins, banjos, and mandolins -- that's someone else reason it's coarse in country music.

Finally, this particular key is one that most people find very easy to sing in. It's not too high, not too low -- just right.

Play these chords in dissimilar combinations; try and become adept in switching in the middle of chords (especially in the middle of the G and the C).

You'll quickly recognize the "I-Iv-V" signature. For instance, "Louie Louie" would be "Ggg Cc Ddd Cc". Most country tunes would be something like "Gggg Gggg Cccc Gggg Dddd Cccc Gggg".

As you become familiar with the pattern, you'll start recognizing dissimilar combinations... Maybe something like "Ddd Ccc Ggg Ggg".

    The Second Three

Our next three chords are: A, D, and E. However, since we already know how to play a D, we're certainly only learning two new chords.

These three chords are also an "I-Iv-V" chord sequence -- just in a slightly higher key, or pitch. You can play the same songs you might play with the G-C-D combo... They'd just be a exiguous higher. It's more coarse to find the A-D-E aggregate in rock music than in country.

    The Third Three

Another "I-Iv-V" progression -- this time, it's C, F, and G. Since we already know C and G, we certainly only have to learn one new chord -- F.

This key is about half-way through the scale from G. That means you can sing whether higher or lower to be in the allowable pitch.

You'll also probably note that F doesn't "ring" as richly as the other chords you've learned -- because it doesn't have as many open strings. You'll probably find it the most difficult to play of all you've learned so far.

It's worth it to spend time to get the "F" chord right. It will certainly pay off further down the road when you begin learning chords in dissimilar positions on the neck of the guitar.

    Another Three

This time we need E, A, and B. We already know E and A -- we just need to add the B. This does gift a problem, though.

B is not an easy chord to play in first position. The easiest way to play a B in this position on the neck is with a "bar chord" -- however, beginner guitar players are normally not quite ready to play bars at first.

A good compromise is to learn the B7 chord in the open position instead. If you count the string closest to you as "1" (the fattest string) and the string furthest from you as "6" (the skinniest string), then the fingering would be: 1-open, 2-second fret, 3-first fret, 4-second fret, 5-open, 6-second fret. By the way, early Beatles music uses this particular chord quite a bit.

The E, A, B (or B7) aggregate is someone else "I-Iv-V" progression. Why it's leading is because this key is very often used in rock-and-roll music. Don't know quite why -- it's not a great natural key for guitar (because of the B issue), it's not the easiest to sing in, and it doesn't mix well with instruments other than an organ -- but it seems to have become standard!

    The Final Three

We've now learned seven chords -- G, C, D, A, E, F, and B7. It's time to slip in the last three. These will be "minor" chords.

The three chords are A Minor, E Minor, and D Minor. These are also written as Am, Em, and Dm.

You won't necessarily play these three chords together -- although if you did, you'd have a great blues progression. Play the A, D, and E progression -- then play the same thing, but use Am, Dm, and Em instead. Yep, that's the "blues", alright.

You'll probably use the Am and Em the most. The Am fits well with the C, F, and G combination. Use it like "C, Am, F, G". (Think of that exiguous piano ditty, "Heart and Soul" -- remember Tom Hanks dancing on the Keyboard in "Big"?) This aggregate works well in both slow and fast tempos.

The Em fits well with G, C, and D -- the order would be "G, Em, C, D". This is the same progression as the last, just again in a dissimilar key.

This particular aggregate (adding the minor with the I-Iv-V chords) is called a "I-iii-Iv-V" progression.

    What's Next

There's a lot you can do with just these ten chords.

Playing the general "I-Iv-V" and "I-iii-Iv-V" progressions in dissimilar keys will serve most singers and will cover many of your popular tunes. You'll also find other progressions with these same chords -- for instance, try A, D, G, C and see what happens.

What chords should you add next? Well, you might want to add the 7th to some of these -- for example, G7, C7, D7, A7, E7.

Next, you'll want to start exploring dissimilar positions on the guitar neck -- which probably means bar chords. I'd learn the B bar chord with your finger over the entire second fret first. Once you specialist this, just slide your hand one fret lower -- and you'll have a B-flat chord -- which fits in in the middle of your F and C to give you someone else "I-Iv-V" progression in a new key!

Still, no matter how far you go and how many chords you master, the odds are quite high that you'll find yourself most often using these basic Top Ten favourites!

House of the Rising Sun Guitar Chords

A few years ago House Of The Rising Sun was voted whole 122 on the Rolling Stone magazine 500 greatest Songs Of All Time. If you learn to play this song, even you just play the intro, citizen are going to recognise you for the cool dude you as a matter of fact are. This is a song that has been colse to for about a hundred years or so. It was first recorded in 1933, and recorded again by some country and folk artists over the years until the definitive version of House Of The Rising Sun Was recorded in 1964 by English group Eric Burdon And The Animals. The song was recorded in one take while the group were on the road in England as a sustain for Chuck Berry, and the spine tingling intro to the song was played by guitarist Hilton Valentine on a Rickenbacker 330 guitar. Many citizen say that it was the first time a folk song was recorded by a rock group.

The guitar chords for the song are easy and you can learn the chord sequence in a few minutes, then spend a few years fooling colse to with arpeggios and strumming patterns and whatnot. So the chords are A minor, C major, D major, F major and E major. To get the feeling of the recording by The Animals just play each chord as an arpeggio like this A minor chord:

Okay, so here is a basic guide to how the chords for House Of The Rising Sun fit in with the lyrics.

    Am C D F
There is a house in New Orleans
    Am C E E
    They call the Rising Sun
    Am C D F
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
    Am E Am
And God I know I'm one

Just Repeat The Chord Sequence For The Rest Of The Verses

    My mom was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin' man
    Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
    Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

    Oh mom tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
    They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

If you hunt colse to the internet you will find some slightly distinct versions, but I would recommend you use what I have given you here as a basis for your own trademark rendition.

Then there are the Minor chords. Minor chords are also chords based on the major scale but instead of the general notes used on a chord, the 2nd note should be a half step lower, so if the C chord is made up of C,E, and G notes, the Cm chord will have a C D# and G note. Major and Minor chords are the coarse chords used in a chord progression.

Another thing you need to learn is the flats and sharps. Flats are chords lowered by half a step and sharps are the opposite or chords which are a half step higher. This tiny information is unmistakably needed in order to understand well how to read guitar music.

In order to read chords you need to know the chords abbreviations and what they would look like in a song sheet. A major chord like for example a C major can be written as C and a C major 7 (a C chord with an further 7th note) can be written as Cm7. For minor chords a C minor can be written as Cm. A flat can be symbolized by a small letter "b" and in E chord it can be written as Eb and Sharps are written using the universal symbol of "#" and in C chord it can be written as C#.

There are two types of song sheet or guitar music sheet, there's the tablature and the easy chord sheet. The tablatures are figures of music bars and each bar signifies as strings on guitar. The numbers on the tablature sheet shows which strings are to pressed and on what fret. While the chord sheet on the other hand are naturally the song with lyrics and the chords above them, the timing of chord changing is based on where it is positioned above the lyrics. The chord sheet is the type we often used and often found on basic song books.

Learning how to read guitar music is a tough process and needs a lot of dedication and hard work, But with the right materials and research, you'll get used to it and reading guitar music would be as easy as reading a text message shortcuts.

Since the guitar has six strings, the maximum numbers of notes in a guitar chord is six. All chords can be located in one of three groups based on the musical buildings of the chord: Major, Minor, or Seventh. Each of these chord groups has its own "sound" or "feel". Major chords sound stable and complete. Minor chords can evoke a more somber or pensive mood, and Seventh chords are jazzy and somewhat incomplete sounding.

Or there is Spanish Caravan by The Doors. This was actually a mixture of a Flamenco guitar style called Granadinas and a classical guitar piece called Asturias by Isaac Albeniz. The guitar playing sounded impressive on the record but it is not a great technical challenge. You can get the normal flavor of the intro to Spanish Caravan by playing the B, C and D bar chords at the second, third and fifth frets. They are all the same chord shape which is based on the A major chord shape in the first position. Here is the B bar chord in tab:

    e--2--------------------|

    B--4--------------------|

    G--4--------------------|

    D--4--------------------|

    A--2--------------------|

    E-----------------------|

Now to get the Flamenco flavor into these chords, take the bar off and put your first finger back on the fifth string and let the first string ring open in all three positions.

So now your B chord is:

    e--0--------------------|

    B--4--------------------|

    G--4--------------------|

    D--4--------------------|

    A--2--------------------|

    E-----------------------|

You can also try the same technique by removing the bar from the F major shape, and consuming it up the fretboard to see how it sounds.

Some favorite Spanish songs you could Google are: Compostelana, La Tarara, Volver, Bomboleiro, Bomoleira, Adelita and La Morena de mi Copla. These are all familiar songs that chords, lyrics and tabs should not be too hard to find on the web.

    Basic Acoustic Guitar Chords

If you haven't already started learning guitar then some basic chords are definitely a good beginning point. If you are already somewhat comfortable with your guitar this record will show you what basic chords would be the best to learn and how to improve your knowledge on guitar chords.

The definition of a chord is basically three notes, but there can be more, which are played together. The maximum notes a chord can have is six, that is because the guitar has six strings. They can be settled in three categories depending on their musical structure which is as follows: Major, Minor or seventh.

    Basic Chords On A Guitar

Some basic chords you might want to learn are A major, A minor, C major, D major,D minor, E major, E minor, F major and G major. You can also find other basic chords and the best way to learn them is by key. If you learn all the chords in one key you will be able to later on use scales on the chord progressions you make.

Some example on chords in a key, from the example shown earlier are as follows: A major, D major and E major are in the key A. G major, A minor, C major, D major and E minor are in the key G. These things are very leading to know because they will help you a lot later on. If you just randomly learn chords at some point you will have to come back and learn these theoretical things or you won't be able to improve further.

An easy recipe to learn there chords is to get a chord chart. There you will see exactly where you need to put your fingers and what fingers to use. Make sure you use exactly the fingers shown in the chart. If you learn the chords differently you might have problems later on. Ordinarily the fingering shown on a chart is the best way to hold a chord anyway. I hope this record was helpful to you and good luck in learning to play the guitar!

Guitar Lessons - Basic Power Chords

Not to over simplify Rock N' Roll but a huge range of music is based on two patterns: The blues vamp and the power chord. Blues vamps and power chords are just names for rhythmic patterns and chords. Today were seeing at the power chords.

What is a Power Chord? Power chords are "movable chords", meaning we can move their position up or down the neck, to originate separate power chords. It's the same shape just beginning in a separate position. The power chord contains two notes, the root note, and a note called the "fifth". Power chords are known as "fifth chords" (written C5 or E5, etc). Power chord are not a Major or Minor in tonal quality. The sample below is a power chord in Tab Format.

The first fret on the Low E is an F so this is and F5 Power Chord. In this case you want to play only the two notes on the Low E and A strong.

    E----5--------

The fifth fret on the Low E is an A so this is and A5 Power Chord. In this case you want to play only the two notes on the Low E and A strong. Observation this is exactly the same shape as the F5 just move up one step or two frets.

In both of these examples we are seeing at power chords with the root note (the one that names the chord) on the Low E or sixth string. The same chord shape can be played with the root note on the A or 5th string.

    G-------------

    D----9--------

    A----7--------

    E-------------

The 7th fret on the A string is an E so this is and E5 Power Chord. In this case you want to play only the two notes on the A and D string, and mute the note on the Low E with the tip of your finger pressing down on the 7th fret of the A string.

The following Power chords are the same chord but played in separate positions on the fret board. Confused?

Don't be. Play colse to with these cool little chords. Add some distortion to your amp and play the notes with all down strokes while alternating string mutes. This is the basic techniques used in most hard rock, metal and grunge styles of Rock N' Roll.

Chords are not notes; instead they are combined of notes. A chord has at least three notes that are played together and sometimes more. A guitar can only have six notes in a chord because there are only six strings. The way to play a chord on the guitar is to strum three of the strings at the same time. The resulting sound is a chord. All chords can fit into one of three groups depending on what notes make up the chord. The groups consist of Major, Minor, and Seventh. The Major chords are the richest sounding chords while the minor chords are a dinky more solemn. Seventh chords do not provide a rich sound like the Major chords and categorically sound like they may be missing something although these chords work well for inescapable types of music.

This style of playing is a mix of chords and lead techniques and when played correctly, it results in a very soulful rhythm style. In this lesson, I walk you through the basic chords that the sequence uses, and then elaborate on how I connect them with Hendrix style hammer-ons and little lead licks to transition from chord to chord.
