Can Singing Be Simple?

If you're whatever like me, you've asked this quiz, a few times. Why? Probably due to all the nonsensical terms associated to learning how to sing - heck, music in general. There's key, tempo, feel, groove. When you get definite about singing, there's more: baritone, alto, soprano, head voice, chest voice, mixed voice, scales, trills, etc.

That's just the technical aspects of it. How about the rumors colse to the topic? Natural talent, there's a safe bet range you were born with, you need to have charisma, etc etc, the list goes on ad infinitum. The first time I picked up an instrument, I was of course ignorant to all these terms; I just picked up my guitar, practiced a few parts, and ultimately was able to play a half-decent song. Oh, and it was fun too!

Basic Chords On A Guitar

Enter the world of "serious" musicians.. Zzzz.. I got introduced to the world of scales, techniques, methods, and got into that for a while. Too long, perhaps. Nowadays, I have this new coming to learning and playing music: it's called Fun! I got tired of learning scales and theories which I have no idea on how to use them, and other endless chores (that's how they felt) and changed how I saw music.

Music to me is a language. It's a universal one, that's what makes it unique, but it's still a language. That's the key to learning it. Imagine learning a language like so: learn the theories first, learn to write, read, more theory, memorize books, regurgitate the memorized stuff, learn words, describe the alphabet etc. That's not how we learned to speak, was it? If that coming were used we would not be able to communicate, ever!

More about this consulation in my site. Let's go back to the subject at hand. What is singing? It's basically using your voice as a musical instrument. It's not reinventing your voice to come to be something else. It's also not about creating another vocal chord for use when singing. The instrument is already there, and we use it every day.

For example, studies have shown that in most countries where western music is dominant, the pitches used in speech are often derived from the C Major scale. This is in general because in Piano music, the C Major scale is the most tasteless group. The study includes musicians and non-musicians. This is evidence of how our voices are already accustomed to producing good potential tones without us having to force them to fall in line.

That's where it gets interesting: if daily speech is already doing all the right things, how easy is it to transition it to more instrument-like roles such as singing? It's very easy if you forget all the useless terms and methods and focus on becoming more aware of the voice on its own - something most of us have probably never done with the voice ever since we received it.

That's what my new site is about: exploring the possibilities when one separates the voice from the musical setting and study it on its own, in all its glory. I try to demystify things such as range: why do we have no problems producing high notes when we talk about something exciting? And we also yield potential low notes when we talk about more melancholy stuff.

How about staying in key? We always stay in the same mean pitch when we talk, and nobody tries to do that; it's natural. Why doesn't this happen when singing? If you're eager to know more about this, I welcome you to a new perspective of how we look at our voices and I'm sure you'll be impressed! By your own voice, not by me;P

Happy Singing!
