Spanish Guitar Songs, Chords and Scales

When you take up the acoustic guitar you want to play songs, right? Maybe to sing some songs nearby the campfire. Lots of pop songs and folk songs sound good accompanied by the acoustic guitar but a sudden wish to play Spanish guitar songs often takes hold of you. If you can play Spanish guitar songs or Spanish sounding instrumentals it is a mark of your develop as a guitar player. This is a wish that many guitarists have but not too many know how to go about finding favorable Spanish flavored music to play.

In order to be some help to these guitarists who wish to have a serious guitar piece to play, I will throw in some suggestions. I know that many of the songs we recognize as Spanish guitar pieces are fairly advanced technically but I am not going to leave any out of my list on the basis of technical difficulty. Any guitar piece you hear is probably ready on tab and it is up to you to decree once you attempt to play the tab either you are trying to play something that is too hard for you.

Basic Chords On A Guitar

So when we think Spanish music what artists do we think of? There is The Gypsy Kings, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Paco De Lucia. How about Jose Feliciano. He played Spanish guitar style arrangements of a couple of Beatles songs.

Or there is Spanish Caravan by The Doors. This was actually a mixture of a Flamenco guitar style called Granadinas and a classical guitar piece called Asturias by Isaac Albeniz. The guitar playing sounded impressive on the record but it is not a great technical challenge. You can get the normal flavor of the intro to Spanish Caravan by playing the B, C and D bar chords at the second, third and fifth frets. They are all the same chord shape which is based on the A major chord shape in the first position. Here is the B bar chord in tab:

e--2--------------------|

B--4--------------------|

G--4--------------------|

D--4--------------------|

A--2--------------------|

E-----------------------|

Now to get the Flamenco flavor into these chords, take the bar off and put your first finger back on the fifth string and let the first string ring open in all three positions.

So now your B chord is:

e--0--------------------|

B--4--------------------|

G--4--------------------|

D--4--------------------|

A--2--------------------|

E-----------------------|

You can also try the same technique by removing the bar from the F major shape, and consuming it up the fretboard to see how it sounds.

Some favorite Spanish songs you could Google are: Compostelana, La Tarara, Volver, Bomboleiro, Bomoleira, Adelita and La Morena de mi Copla. These are all familiar songs that chords, lyrics and tabs should not be too hard to find on the web.

Piano tabs

Piano Tabs vs. Guitar Tabs

Piano Tabs are basically the same as guitar tabs. Why is that fact important to you? plainly because most chords/lyrics which are in tab form on the internet are going to be listed as "Guitar Tabs" and not necessarily "Piano Tabs". The chords to a song, the lyrics to a song are the same regardless if a guitarist or a pianist is playing it. So if you're finding for the "tabs" for a song on the internet, you may end up having to look at a guitar tab site rather than a piano tab site. But no big deal here!

Basic Chords On A Guitar

One big variation with guitar tabs, which of procedure is short for "guitar tablature", is that the guitar diagrams are practically always shown and these indicate what fret, string, etc. To play. Just ignore that part. You're only finding to get the lyrics and chords and disregard everything else relating to guitar playing. A pupil of mine once pleaded with me to illustrate how to directly translate the guitar notation into piano. Here's the deal though, pianists Do Not waste time doing that exercise. Maybe it'll be fun for you but practically speaking, it's a waste of time. Guitarists don't typically take a fully written piano arrangement and citation out each note to directly use that to achieve on guitar. So conversely, why whould you want to do this for piano? Just chords and lyrics my friends, chords and lyrics!!

By the way, many pianists never use guitar tab books or guitar tab sheets to work up songs. I literally do! They argue that the melody line is not included there but it is always found in "lead sheets". What I do for a song I'm familiar with, is I have already memorized the melody line, (a relatively straightforward task) so all I'm missing is the chords and lyrics. Case in point, recently, I bought a phenomenal Billy Joel Guitar Tab book. I would assume though that very few keyboard players would consider picking up such a book. My conception though was that the fact that I know these songs so well, just having the chords in front of me would enable me to play the song. Additionally, I could now incorporate on working on my singing without being bogged down on the note for note piano arrangement. When you're on stage, chances are you have memorized everything already, but if you have the guitar/piano tabs in front of you as a "cheat sheet", it enables you to still achieve the song with minimal diversion to "looking at the music".

But the most important aspect of this type of "tab" playing is that in my experience, with pop/rock band performance, the best, most effective data you can have to play any song and learn it speedily are guitar tabs!! That is the private Weapon all these garage bands use to work up songs and they're able to do a great job playing these songs, regardless of how much original harmonic ideas they have been exposed to!

Lesson learned? Go Google or crusade out your beloved songs and put "tab" after the song, and you're 80% on the way to perfecting that song in its entirety!

There are many sites on the web where you can find Piano Tabs. If you are able to find a good piano tab site or at least definite tabs for a song you're searching for, you are well on your way to playing that song. The major obstacles to creating that song from tabs are

Chords

1. Sites infected with Viruses - Unfortunately, this is a very base qoute at tab sites. More often than you'd like, your computer can be infected so make sure your viral protection programs are up and running. If you do not have protection for virus infection, you can get free trail downloads at http://www.download.com.

2. Wrong chords and/or lyrics -
Many of the tabs listed on the web for your beloved songs have been put together by well intentioned amateurs who either don't double check that all the chords are definite or maybe are unable to distinguish in the middle of a definite chord and an incorrect one.

On a scale of 1-10, there are varying degrees of "wrongness" for any chord. Example, if the definite chord should be G7 and instead the chord is listed plainly as G, well that's a minor offense and you could say it's a "9" in terms of accuracy. A base mistake is listing the relative minor for a major chord or visa versa. For this error, we might consider it a 6 or 7 in terms of accuracy. In short, for well regarded substitutions for chords, one can live with that. However, with free piano tabs, you can often see wrong chords listed which are at the opposite end of the spectrum for what the chord should in fact be. The chord might be a B flat minor and the tab says that it's a G sharp major, not even close and fully out there in "left field"! We'd give that infraction a "1" on a scale of 10. Then again, you will absolutely see chords that are that far off. Your final judge should be your "ear", engage your potential musicality- if it sounds wrong or literally bad to you, there's a good chance that it is in fact wrong.

Lyrics

For lyrics, again, the same important applies here - you will see major infractions and minor ones. Just take the posture that the lyrics are "guilty" until proven innocent, i.e., are not 100% definite until you proof them against either an artist songbook or against a recording.

With No Written Reference for the Lyric: If a song has never been published or maybe is out of print and one plainly can not find a written reference to check the song tabs against, then your guess is as good as anyone's really. In this case, you basically have to check it and proof it against the recording to find out how definite it is.

Missing Lyrics and/or Chords

Another base phenomenon with free piano tabs or free tabs is that whole whole portions or sections of a song may be eliminated. It can be frustrating when this occurs so just check against the artist songbook if you have one or if one is ready or check against other tab sites for that song. Speaking of which, "comparison shopping" can be a good idea with free tab sites, taking a consensus of opinion, using your own musicality as the ultimate judge again and determining which portions of a tab for any song is definite or exciting to you and which ones are not.

Basic Acoustic Guitar Chords

If you haven't already started learning guitar then some basic chords are definitely a good beginning point. If you are already somewhat comfortable with your guitar this record will show you what basic chords would be the best to learn and how to improve your knowledge on guitar chords.

The definition of a chord is basically three notes, but there can be more, which are played together. The maximum notes a chord can have is six, that is because the guitar has six strings. They can be settled in three categories depending on their musical structure which is as follows: Major, Minor or seventh.

Basic Chords On A Guitar

Some basic chords you might want to learn are A major, A minor, C major, D major,D minor, E major, E minor, F major and G major. You can also find other basic chords and the best way to learn them is by key. If you learn all the chords in one key you will be able to later on use scales on the chord progressions you make.

Some example on chords in a key, from the example shown earlier are as follows: A major, D major and E major are in the key A. G major, A minor, C major, D major and E minor are in the key G. These things are very leading to know because they will help you a lot later on. If you just randomly learn chords at some point you will have to come back and learn these theoretical things or you won't be able to improve further.

An easy recipe to learn there chords is to get a chord chart. There you will see exactly where you need to put your fingers and what fingers to use. Make sure you use exactly the fingers shown in the chart. If you learn the chords differently you might have problems later on. Ordinarily the fingering shown on a chart is the best way to hold a chord anyway. I hope this record was helpful to you and good luck in learning to play the guitar!

America: Horse With No Name

Horse With No Name is a beloved song written by Dewey Bunnel from the band America. The song consists of two chords, "E minor" and "D". The same chords are repeated throughout the verse as well as the chorus.

Jimmy Buffet: Margaritaville

Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet is easy to play and is always a crowd favorite. The chord progressions goes D-A-G throughout the song. The song is also a great one to learn because beginners can play the basic chords and learn the more advanced stuff such as the walking bass line as they progress.
